Q: Should I say “hours” after giving time?

A: In formal writing, the word “hours” is always added. However, in conversations, when your meaning is obvious, it’s very typical to drop the “hours”.

In addition, soldiers and members of the Army will usually add the word “hours”. Marines and Coast Guard members will usually drop the “hours”.

Q: Can I say “Oh” instead of Zero?

A: In everyday conversations and in the Movies, you are likely to hear “Oh”s, but military members always say Zero to avoid ambiguity.

Military time is the clock format in which the day lasts from midnight to midnight. At midnight, the hours begin at 00 and go up to 23. This clock format has become the international time standard because it is clear, concise, and unambiguous.

While the clock formats in other countries use a 12-hour format (hh:mm), the military time is a 4-digit number without a break. You can click here to download our simple military time converter.

The military time notation clearly distinguishes between the beginning and end of the day. However, in the 12-hour format, there is no such distinction.

The military time is similar to the 24-hour clock, except that there is no colon in the military time. It is pronounced as a single number without the distinction between hours and minutes.
